Rooney is a scouser and was born in Croxteth, which is a suburb of Liverpool in 1985. The family is of Irish descent and are Catholic. Rooney attended a Catholic school. He played football for Liverpool Schoolboys until he was 15 and famously scored 72 goals in a single season.

Between the ages of 9 and 15 Rooney played for Liverpool Schoolboys and scored record numbers of goals. Spotted by a scout he joined Everton ages nine and made his first appearance with them as an unused substitute in 2002.

The following year he played his first game and in that October his first goals were in a match against Wrexham; he scored twice and became the club’s youngest ever goal scorer.

In 2004, aged 18, he left Everton to sign for Manchester United. The transfer fee was a massive £25.6 million. In his first match with United he scored three goals in a Champions League match against Fenerbahce. With 11 league goals, he was the club’s top scorer that year. To date Rooney has scored 147 goals for United, his best season being 2009-10 when he scored an astonishing 34 goals.

He is also the youngest England player when he debuted in 2003 aged 17. He was also the youngest goal scorer. He has appeared for England 70 times and has scored 26 goals.

Rooney has always courted controversy and has a petulant nature. He also has a thuggish personality and uses foul language. He is alleged to have frequented with prostitutes on several occasions. His innate violent nature has landed him in trouble both on and off the pitch despite having taken a number of anger management courses in an attempt to tame his inner beast; it takes little to make him flare up.

Rooney has come a long way from that small house on the Croxteth estate. He now lives with his wife Coleen in a mansion in a Cheshire village which is reputed to have cost £4.25 million. It has been a habit for Park Ji Sung to score against big team especially Arsenal. His first half goal early this morning was his forth goal against Arsenal. And with him only scored the total of 16 goals for United…it is a really big percentage!

If you believe in omens then it’s good news – the Reds have twice started campaigns against the Magpies in the Premier League era, in 2000/01 (won 2-0), and 2008/09 (1-1), and on both occasions have gone on to win the title.

There are the usual tricky patches, of course, with back-to-back clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea twice – in December (11, 18) and in the run-in (30 April, 7 May).

The last ten fixtures of the campaign look like producing plenty of fireworks with away trips to Anfield, Upton Park, St James’ Park, the Emirates Stadium and Ewood Park, with home games against Everton and Chelsea thrown in too.

He is maybe not the BEST player for 2009 ..but his personality is second to none! He can be a role model for any sports available in this world. His passion…charisma..work rate were so great.

I remember watching him in National Stadium in the match against Malaysia… he continue training with Gary Neville and Paul Scholes just after the match!!..fuhh.. what a role model for the young Manutd squad.

Manchester United star Ryan Giggs was crowned 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year in Sunday’s award ceremony.

The Welsh winger, 36, is the most decorated player in English football with a record 11th Premier League winners’ medal secured this year.

Formula 1 champion Jenson Button was second with world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis securing third spot.

“This is a shock as you can tell by the speech I’ve prepared,” joked Giggs when collecting his award.

“I grew up watching this programme. To see the people that have won it and to be here is unbelievable.”

A surprised Giggs is the first footballer to claim the prestigious trophy since England midfielder David Beckham in 2001, with Michael Owen (1998), Paul Gascoigne (1990) and Bobby Moore (1966) the only other football winners.

With the public choosing their favourite from the shortlist of 10 by phone on the night, Giggs received 29.4% of the vote (151,842 votes) ahead of Button (18.74% – 96,770) and Ennis (15.58% – 80,469) with a total of 516,473 votes cast.

This year has seen Giggs win the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award for the first time in April and the Wales Sports Personality of the Year award, and in a United shirt he has made his 800th appearance, scored his 150th goal and helping them reach the Champions League final.

The Cardiff-born star added: “I am playing for the greatest manager that has ever lived and I’m playing for the greatest club. Perhaps I’ve become more appreciated as I have got older.

“It’s unusual for a 36-year-old to be playing with a team like Manchester United for 20 years but I am enjoying it and long may it continue.”

After Ferguson revealed on Friday that his veteran playmaker had been offered a new contract for next season, Giggs said: “It was the first I had heard of it the other day so I was quite pleased. Hopefully there will be another year after that.”

Liverpool did enjoy more possession but they did as little with it as Marseille achieved with the 64 per cent of the play they had in the Velodrome last Tuesday night. It is not how much time you have with the ball that matters, it is what you do with it. And too often, Liverpool’s passing was either inept or achingly obvious.
